Four key chapters on the study of Babylon ========================================= Isaiah 13 1. The burden <4853> of Babylon <0894>, which <0834> Isaiah <3470> the son <1121> of Amoz <0531> did see <2372>. 2 Lift <5375> ye up a banner <5251> upon the high <8192> mountain <2022>, exalt <7311> the voice <6963> unto them, shake <5130> the hand <3027>, that they may go <0935> into the gates <6607> of the nobles <5081>. 3 I have commanded <6680> my sanctified <6942> ones, I have also <1571> called <7121> my mighty <1368> ones for mine anger <0639>, [even] them that rejoice <5947> in my highness <1346>. 4 The noise <6963> of a multitude <1995> in the mountains <2022>, like <1823> as of a great <7227> people <5971>; a tumultuous <7588> noise <6963> of the kingdoms <4467> of nations <1471> gathered <0622> together: the LORD <3068> of hosts <6635> mustereth <6485> the host <6635> of the battle <4421>. 5 They come <0935> from a far <4801> country <0776>, from the end <7093> of heaven <8064>, [even] the LORD <3068>, and the weapons <3627> of his indignation <2195>, to destroy <2254> the whole <3605> land <0776>. 6. Howl <3213> ye; for the day <3117> of the LORD <3068> [is] at <7138> hand <7138>; it shall come <0935> as a destruction <7701> from the Almighty <7706>. 7 Therefore shall all <3605> hands <3027> be faint <7503>, and every <3605> man's <0582> heart <3824> shall melt <4549>: 8 And they shall be afraid <0926>: pangs <6735> and sorrows <2256> shall take <0270> hold <0270> of them; they shall be in pain <2342> as a woman that travaileth <3205>: they shall be amazed <8539> one <0376> at <0413> another <7453>; their faces <6440> [shall be as] flames <3851>. 9 Behold <2009>, the day <3117> of the LORD <3068> cometh <0935>, cruel <0394> both with wrath <5678> and fierce <2740> anger <0639>, to lay the land <0776> desolate <8047>: and he shall destroy <8045> the sinners <2400> thereof out of it. 10 For the stars <3556> of heaven <8064> and the constellations <3685> thereof shall not give their light <0216>: the sun <8121> shall be darkened <2821> in his going <3318> forth <3318>, and the moon <3394> shall not cause her light <0216> to shine <5050>. 11 And I will punish <6485> the world <8398> for [their] evil <7451>, and the wicked <7563> for their iniquity <5771>; and I will cause the arrogancy <1347> of the proud <2086> to cease <7673>, and will lay low <8213> the haughtiness <1346> of the terrible <6184>. 12 I will make a man <0582> more precious <3365> than fine gold <6337>; even a man <0120> than the golden <3800> wedge of Ophir <0211>. 13 Therefore I will shake <7264> the heavens <8064>, and the earth <0776> shall remove <7493> out of her place <4725>, in the wrath <5678> of the LORD <3068> of hosts <6635>, and in the day <3117> of his fierce <2740> anger <0639>. 14 And it shall be as the chased <5080> roe <6643>, and as a sheep <6629> that no <0369> man taketh <6908> up: they shall every man <0376> turn <6437> to his own people <5971>, and flee <5127> every <0376> one into <0413> his own land <0776>. 15 Every <3605> one that is found <4672> shall be thrust <1856> through <1856>; and every <3605> one that is joined <5595> [unto them] shall fall <5307> by the sword <2719>. 16 Their children <5768> also shall be dashed <7376> to pieces before their eyes <5869>; their houses <1004> shall be spoiled <8155>, and their wives <0802> ravished <7693>. 17 Behold <2005>, I will stir <5782> up the Medes <4074> against <5921> them, which <0834> shall not regard <2803> silver <3701>; and [as for] gold <2091>, they shall not delight <2654> in it. 18 [Their] bows <7198> also shall dash <7376> the young <5288> men to pieces; and they shall have no <3808> pity <7355> on the fruit <6529> of the womb <0990>; their eye <5869> shall not spare <2347> children <1121>. 19. And Babylon <0894>, the glory <6643> of kingdoms <4467>, the beauty <8597> of the Chaldees <3778>' excellency <1347>, shall be as when God <0430> overthrew <4114> Sodom <5467> and Gomorrah <6017>. 20 It shall never be inhabited <3427>, neither <3808> shall it be dwelt <7931> in from generation <1755> to generation <1755>: neither <3808> shall the Arabian <6153> pitch <0167> tent <0167> there <8033>; neither <3808> shall the shepherds <7462> make their fold <7257> there <8033>. 21 But wild <6728> beasts <6728> of the desert <6728> shall lie <7257> there <8033>; and their houses <1004> shall be full <4390> of doleful <0255> creatures <0255>; and owls shall dwell <7931> there <8033>, and satyrs <8163> shall dance <7540> there <8033>. 22 And the wild <0338> beasts <0338> of the islands <0338> shall cry <6030> in their desolate <0490> houses <0490>, and dragons <8577> in [their] pleasant <6027> palaces <1964>: and her time <6256> [is] near <7138> to come <0935>, and her days <3117> shall not be prolonged <4900>. Isaiah 14 1. For the LORD <3068> will have mercy <7355> on Jacob <3290>, and will yet <5750> choose <0977> Israel <3478>, and set <3240> them in their own land <0127>: and the strangers <1616> shall be joined <3867> with them, and they shall cleave <5596> to the house <1004> of Jacob <3290>. 2 And the people <5971> shall take <3947> them, and bring <0935> them to their place <4725>: and the house <1004> of Israel <3478> shall possess <5157> them in the land <0127> of the LORD <3068> for servants <5650> and handmaids <8198>: and they shall take them captives <7617>, whose captives <7617> they were; and they shall rule <7287> over their oppressors <5065>. 3 And it shall come <1961> to pass in the day <3117> that the LORD <3068> shall give thee rest <5117> from thy sorrow <6090>, and from thy fear <7267>, and from the hard <7186> bondage <5656> wherein <0834> thou wast made to serve <5647>, 4. That thou shalt take <5375> up this <2088> proverb <4912> against <5921> the king <4428> of Babylon <0894>, and say <0559>, How <0349> hath the oppressor <5065> ceased <7673>! the golden <4062> city <4062> ceased <7673>! 5 The LORD <3068> hath broken <7665> the staff <4294> of the wicked <7563>, [and] the sceptre <7626> of the rulers <4910>. 6 He who smote <5221> the people <5971> in wrath <5678> with a continual stroke <4347>, he that ruled <7287> the nations <1471> in anger <0639>, is persecuted <4783>, [and] none <1097> hindereth <2820>. 7 The whole <3605> earth <0776> is at rest <5117>, [and] is quiet <8252>: they break <6476> forth into singing <7440>. 8 Yea <1571>, the fir <1265> trees rejoice <8055> at thee, [and] the cedars <0730> of Lebanon <3844>, [saying], Since <0227> thou art laid <7901> down <7901>, no <3808> feller <3772> is come <5927> up against <5921> us. 9 Hell <7585> from beneath <8478> is moved <7264> for thee to meet <7125> [thee] at thy coming <0935>: it stirreth <5782> up the dead <7496> for thee, [even] all <3605> the chief <6260> ones of the earth <0776>; it hath raised <6965> up from their thrones <3678> all <3605> the kings <4428> of the nations <1471>. 10 All <3605> they shall speak <6030> and say <0559> unto thee, Art thou also <1571> become <2470> weak <2470> as we? art thou become <4911> like <4911> unto us? 11 Thy pomp <1347> is brought <3381> down <3381> to the grave <7585>, [and] the noise <1998> of thy viols <5035>: the worm <7415> is spread <3331> under <8478> thee, and the worms <8438> cover <4374> thee. 12 How <0349> art thou fallen <5307> from heaven <8064>, O Lucifer <1966>, son <1121> of the morning <7837>! [how <0349>] art thou cut <1438> down <1438> to the ground <0776>, which didst weaken <2522> the nations <1471>! 13 For thou hast said <0559> in thine heart <3824>, I will ascend <5927> into heaven <8064>, I will exalt <7311> my throne <3678> above <4605> the stars <3556> of God <0410>: I will sit <3427> also upon the mount <2022> of the congregation <4150>, in the sides <3411> of the north <6828>: 14 I will ascend <5927> above <5921> the heights <1116> of the clouds <5645>; I will be like <1819> the most <5945> High <5945>. 15 Yet <0389> thou shalt be brought <3381> down <3381> to hell <7585>, to the sides <3411> of the pit <0953>. 16 They that see <7200> thee shall narrowly look <7688> upon thee, [and] consider <0995> thee, [saying <0559>, Is] this <2088> the man <0376> that made the earth <0776> to tremble <7264>, that did shake <7493> kingdoms <4467>; 17 [That] made <7760> the world <8398> as a wilderness <4057>, and destroyed <2040> the cities <5892> thereof; [that] opened <6605> not the house <1004> of his prisoners <0615>? 18 All <3605> the kings <4428> of the nations <1471>, [even] all <3605> of them, lie <7901> in glory <3519>, every <0376> one <0376> in his own house <1004>. 19 But thou art cast <7993> out of thy grave <6913> like an abominable <8581> branch <5342>, [and as] the raiment <3830> of those that are slain <2026>, thrust <2944> through <2944> with a sword <2719>, that go <3381> down <3381> to the stones <68> of the pit <0953>; as a carcase <6297> trodden <0947> under feet. 20 Thou shalt not be joined <3161> with them in burial <6900>, because <3588> thou hast destroyed <7843> thy land <0776>, [and] slain <2026> thy people <5971>: the seed <2233> of evildoers <7489> shall never be renowned <7121>. 21 Prepare <3559> slaughter <4293> for his children <1121> for the iniquity <5771> of their fathers <1>; that they do not rise <6965>, nor possess <3423> the land <0776>, nor fill <4390> the face <6440> of the world <8398> with cities <5892>. 22 For I will rise <6965> up against <5921> them, saith <5002> the LORD <3068> of hosts <6635>, and cut <3772> off from Babylon <0894> the name <8034>, and remnant <7605>, and son <5209>, and nephew <5220>, saith <5002> the LORD <3068>. 23 I will also make <7760> it a possession <4180> for the bittern <7090>, and pools <98> of water <4325>: and I will sweep <2894> it with the besom <4292> of destruction <8045>, saith <5002> the LORD <3068> of hosts <6635>. 24. The LORD <3068> of hosts <6635> hath sworn <7650>, saying <0559>, Surely as I have thought <1819>, so shall it come <1961> to pass; and as I have purposed <3289>, [so <3651>] shall it stand <6965>: 25 That I will break <7665> the Assyrian <0804> in my land <0776>, and upon my mountains <2022> tread <0947> him under foot <0947>: then shall his yoke <5923> depart <5493> from off <5921> them, and his burden <5448> depart <5493> from off <5921> their shoulders <7926>. 26 This <2063> [is] the purpose <6098> that is purposed <3289> upon the whole <3605> earth <0776>: and this <2063> [is] the hand <3027> that is stretched <5186> out upon all <3605> the nations <1471>. 27 For the LORD <3068> of hosts <6635> hath purposed <3289>, and who <4310> shall disannul <6565> [it]? and his hand <3027> [is] stretched <5186> out, and who <4310> shall turn <7725> it back <7725>? 28 In the year <8141> that king <4428> Ahaz <0271> died <4194> was this <2088> burden <4853>. 29 Rejoice <8055> not thou, whole <3605> Palestina <6429>, because <3588> the rod <7626> of him that smote <5221> thee is broken <7665>: for out of the serpent's <5175> root <8328> shall come <3318> forth <3318> a cockatrice <6848>, and his fruit <6529> [shall be] a fiery <8314> flying <5774> serpent <8314>. 30 And the firstborn <1060> of the poor <1800> shall feed <7462>, and the needy <34> shall lie <7257> down <7257> in safety <0983>: and I will kill <4191> thy root <8328> with famine <7458>, and he shall slay <2026> thy remnant <7611>. 31 Howl <3213>, O gate <8179>; cry <2199>, O city <5892>; thou, whole <3605> Palestina <6429>, [art] dissolved <4127>: for there shall come <0935> from the north <6828> a smoke <6227>, and none <0369> [shall be] alone <0909> in his appointed <4151> times <4151>. 32 What <4100> shall [one] then answer <6030> the messengers <4397> of the nation <1471>? That the LORD <3068> hath founded <3245> Zion <6726>, and the poor <6041> of his people <5971> shall trust <2620> in it. Jeremiah 50 1. The word <1697> that the LORD <3068> spake <1696> against <0413> Babylon <0894> [and] against <0413> the land <0776> of the Chaldeans <3778> by Jeremiah <3414> the prophet <5030>. 2 Declare <5046> ye among the nations <1471>, and publish <8085>, and set <5375> up a standard <5251>; publish <8085>, [and] conceal <3582> not: say <0559>, Babylon <0894> is taken <3920>, Bel <1078> is confounded <3001>, Merodach <4781> is broken <2844> in pieces; her idols <6091> are confounded <3001>, her images <1544> are broken <2865> in pieces. 3 For out of the north <6828> there cometh <5927> up a nation <1471> against <5921> her, which <1931> shall make <7896> her land <0776> desolate <8047>, and none <3808> shall dwell <3427> therein: they shall remove <5110>, they shall depart <1980>, both man <0120> and beast <0929>. 4 In those <1992> days <3117>, and in that time <6256>, saith <5002> the LORD <3068>, the children <1121> of Israel <3478> shall come <0935>, they and the children <1121> of Judah <3063> together <3162>, going <1980> and weeping <1058>: they shall go <3212>, and seek <1245> the LORD <3068> their God <0430>. 5 They shall ask <7592> the way <1870> to Zion <6726> with their faces <6440> thitherward <2008>, [saying], Come <0935>, and let us join <3867> ourselves to the LORD <3068> in a perpetual <5769> covenant <1285> [that] shall not be forgotten <7911>. 6 My people <5971> hath been <1961> lost <6> sheep <6629>: their shepherds <7462> have caused them to go <8582> astray <8582>, they have turned <7725> them away [on] the mountains <2022>: they have gone <1980> from mountain <2022> to hill <1389>, they have forgotten <7911> their restingplace <7258>. 7 All <3605> that found <4672> them have devoured <0398> them: and their adversaries <6862> said <0559>, We offend <0816> not, because they have sinned <2398> against the LORD <3068>, the habitation <5116> of justice <6664>, even the LORD <3068>, the hope <4723> of their fathers <1>. 8 Remove <5110> out of the midst <8432> of Babylon <0894>, and go <3318> forth <3318> out of the land <0776> of the Chaldeans <3778>, and be as the he goats <6260> before <6440> the flocks <6629>. 9. For, lo <2009>, I will raise <5782> and cause to come <5927> up against <5921> Babylon <0894> an assembly <6951> of great <1419> nations <1471> from the north <6828> country <0776>: and they shall set themselves in array <6186> against her; from thence <8033> she shall be taken <3920>: their arrows <2671> [shall be] as of a mighty <1368> expert <7919> man; none <3808> shall return <7725> in vain <7387>. 10 And Chaldea <3778> shall be a spoil <7998>: all <3605> that spoil <7998> her shall be satisfied <7646>, saith <5002> the LORD <3068>. 11 Because <3588> ye were glad <8056>, because <3588> ye rejoiced <5937>, O ye destroyers <8154> of mine heritage <5159>, because <3588> ye are grown <6335> fat <6335> as the heifer <5697> at grass <1877>, and bellow <6670> as bulls <47>; 12 Your mother <0517> shall be sore <3966> confounded <0954>; she that bare <3205> you shall be ashamed <2659>: behold <2009>, the hindermost <0319> of the nations <1471> [shall be] a wilderness <4057>, a dry <6723> land, and a desert <6160>. 13 Because of the wrath <7110> of the LORD <3068> it shall not be inhabited <3427>, but it shall be wholly <3605> desolate <8077>: every <3605> one that goeth <5674> by Babylon <0894> shall be astonished <8074>, and hiss <8319> at <5921> all <3605> her plagues <4347>. 14 Put yourselves in array <6186> against <5921> Babylon <0894> round <5439> about: all <3605> ye that bend <1869> the bow <7198>, shoot <3034> at <0413> her, spare <2550> no <0408> arrows <2671>: for she hath sinned <2398> against the LORD <3068>. 15 Shout <7321> against <5921> her round <5439> about: she hath given <5414> her hand <3027>: her foundations <0803> are fallen <5307>, her walls <2346> are thrown <2040> down <2040>: for it [is] the vengeance <5360> of the LORD <3068>: take vengeance <5358> upon her; as she hath done <6213>, do <6213> unto her. 16 Cut <3772> off the sower <2232> from Babylon <0894>, and him that handleth <8610> the sickle <4038> in the time <6256> of harvest <7105>: for fear <6440> of the oppressing <3238> sword <2719> they shall turn <6437> every <0376> one <0376> to his people <5971>, and they shall flee <5127> every <0376> one <0376> to his own land <0776>. 17 Israel <3478> [is] a scattered <6340> sheep <7716>; the lions <0738> have driven <5080> [him] away: first <7223> the king <4428> of Assyria <0804> hath devoured <0398> him; and last <0314> this <2088> Nebuchadrezzar <5019> king <4428> of Babylon <0894> hath broken <6105> his bones <6106>. 18 Therefore <3651> thus <3541> saith <0559> the LORD <3068> of hosts <6635>, the God <0430> of Israel <3478>; Behold <2005>, I will punish <6485> the king <4428> of Babylon <0894> and his land <0776>, as I have punished <6485> the king <4428> of Assyria <0804>. 19 And I will bring <7725> Israel <3478> again <7725> to his habitation <5116>, and he shall feed <7462> on Carmel <3760> and Bashan <1316>, and his soul <5315> shall be satisfied <7646> upon mount <2022> Ephraim <0669> and Gilead <1568>. 20 In those <1992> days <3117>, and in that time <6256>, saith <5002> the LORD <3068>, the iniquity <5771> of Israel <3478> shall be sought <1245> for, and [there shall be] none <0369>; and the sins <2403> of Judah <3063>, and they shall not be found <4672>: for I will pardon <5545> them whom <0834> I reserve <7604>. 21. Go <5927> up against <5921> the land <0776> of Merathaim <4850>, [even] against <5921> it, and against <0413> the inhabitants <3427> of Pekod <6489>: waste <2717> and utterly destroy <2763> after <0310> them, saith <5002> the LORD <3068>, and do <6213> according to all <3605> that I have commanded <6680> thee. 22 A sound <6963> of battle <4421> [is] in the land <0776>, and of great <1419> destruction <7667>. 23 How <0349> is the hammer <6360> of the whole <3605> earth <0776> cut <1438> asunder and broken <7665>! how <0349> is Babylon <0894> become <1961> a desolation <8047> among the nations <1471>! 24 I have laid a snare <3369> for thee, and thou art also <1571> taken <3920>, O Babylon <0894>, and thou wast not aware <3045>: thou art found <4672>, and also <1571> caught <8610>, because <3588> thou hast striven <1624> against the LORD <3068>. 25 The LORD <3068> hath opened <6605> his armoury <0214>, and hath brought <3318> forth <3318> the weapons <3627> of his indignation <2195>: for this <1931> [is] the work <4399> of the Lord <0136> GOD <3069> of hosts <6635> in the land <0776> of the Chaldeans <3778>. 26 Come <0935> against her from the utmost <7093> border <7093>, open <6605> her storehouses <3965>: cast <5549> her up as heaps <6194>, and destroy <2763> her utterly: let nothing <0408> of her be left <7611>. 27 Slay <2717> all <3605> her bullocks <6499>; let them go <3381> down <3381> to the slaughter <2875>: woe <1945> unto them! for their day <3117> is come <0935>, the time <6256> of their visitation <6486>. 28 The voice <6963> of them that flee <5127> and escape <6412> out of the land <0776> of Babylon <0894>, to declare <5046> in Zion <6726> the vengeance <5360> of the LORD <3068> our God <0430>, the vengeance <5360> of his temple <1964>. 29 Call <8085> together the archers <7228> against <0413> Babylon <0894>: all <3605> ye that bend <1869> the bow <7198>, camp <2583> against <5921> it round <5439> about; let none <0408> thereof escape <6413>: recompense <7999> her according to her work <6467>; according to all <3605> that she hath done <6213>, do <6213> unto her: for she hath been proud <2102> against <0413> the LORD <3068>, against <0413> the Holy <6944> One of Israel <3478>. 30 Therefore <3651> shall her young <0970> men fall <5307> in the streets <7339>, and all <3605> her men <0582> of war <4421> shall be cut <1826> off in that day <3117>, saith <5002> the LORD <3068>. 31 Behold <2005>, I [am <1961>] against <0413> thee, [O thou] most proud <2087>, saith <5002> the Lord <0136> GOD <3069> of hosts <6635>: for thy day <3117> is come <0935>, the time <6256> [that] I will visit <6485> thee. 32 And the most proud <2087> shall stumble <3782> and fall <5307>, and none <0369> shall raise <6965> him up: and I will kindle <3341> a fire <0784> in his cities <5892>, and it shall devour <0398> all <3605> round <5439> about him. 33. Thus <3541> saith <0559> the LORD <3068> of hosts <6635>; The children <1121> of Israel <3478> and the children <1121> of Judah <3063> [were] oppressed <6231> together <3162>: and all <3605> that took them captives <7617> held <2388> them fast; they refused <3985> to let them go <7971>. 34 Their Redeemer <1350> [is] strong <2389>; the LORD <3068> of hosts <6635> [is] his name <8034>: he shall throughly plead <7378> their cause <7379>, that he may give rest <7280> to the land <0776>, and disquiet <7264> the inhabitants <3427> of Babylon <0894>. 35 A sword <2719> [is] upon the Chaldeans <3778>, saith <5002> the LORD <3068>, and upon the inhabitants <3427> of Babylon <0894>, and upon her princes <8269>, and upon her wise <2450> [men]. 36 A sword <2719> [is] upon the liars <0907>; and they shall dote <2973>: a sword <2719> [is] upon her mighty <1368> men; and they shall be dismayed <2865>. 37 A sword <2719> [is] upon their horses <5483>, and upon their chariots <7393>, and upon all <3605> the mingled <6154> people that [are] in the midst <8432> of her; and they shall become <1961> as women <0802>: a sword <2719> [is] upon her treasures <0214>; and they shall be robbed <0962>. 38 A drought <2721> [is] upon her waters <4325>; and they shall be dried <3001> up: for it [is] the land <0776> of graven <6456> images, and they are mad <1984> upon [their] idols <0367>. 39 Therefore <3651> the wild <6728> beasts <6728> of the desert <6728> with the wild <0338> beasts <0338> of the islands <0339> shall dwell <3427> [there], and the owls shall dwell <3427> therein: and it shall be no <3808> more <5750> inhabited <3427> for ever <5331>; neither <3808> shall it be dwelt <7931> in from generation <1755> to generation <1755>. 40 As God <0430> overthrew <4114> Sodom <5467> and Gomorrah <6017> and the neighbour <7934> [cities] thereof, saith <5002> the LORD <3068>; [so] shall no <3808> man <0376> abide <3427> there <8033>, neither <3808> shall any son <1121> of man <0120> dwell <1481> therein. 41 Behold <2009>, a people <5971> shall come <0935> from the north <6828>, and a great <1419> nation <1471>, and many <7227> kings <4428> shall be raised <5782> up from the coasts <3411> of the earth <0776>. 42 They shall hold <2388> the bow <7198> and the lance <3591>: they [are] cruel <0394>, and will not shew mercy <7355>: their voice <6963> shall roar <1993> like the sea <3220>, and they shall ride <7392> upon horses <5483>, [every one] put in array <6186>, like a man <0376> to the battle <4421>, against <5921> thee, O daughter <1323> of Babylon <0894>. 43 The king <4428> of Babylon <0894> hath heard <8085> the report <8088> of them, and his hands <3027> waxed feeble <7503>: anguish <6869> took hold <2388> of him, [and] pangs <2427> as of a woman in travail <3205>. 44 Behold <2009>, he shall come <5927> up like a lion <0738> from the swelling <1347> of Jordan <3383> unto the habitation <5116> of the strong <0386>: but I will make them suddenly <7280> run <7323> away from her: and who <4310> [is] a chosen <0970> [man, that] I may appoint <6485> over <0413> her? for who <4310> [is] like <3644> me? and who <4310> will appoint <3259> me the time? and who <4310> [is] that shepherd <7462> that will stand <5975> before <6440> me? 45 Therefore <3651> hear <8085> ye the counsel <6098> of the LORD <3068>, that he hath taken <3289> against <0413> Babylon <0894>; and his purposes <4284>, that he hath purposed <2803> against <0413> the land <0776> of the Chaldeans <3778>: Surely the least <6810> of the flock <6629> shall draw <5498> them out: surely he shall make [their] habitation <5116> desolate <8074> with them. 46 At the noise <6963> of the taking <8610> of Babylon <0894> the earth <0776> is moved <7493>, and the cry <2201> is heard <8085> among the nations <1471>. Jeremiah 51 1. Thus <3541> saith <0559> the LORD <3068>; Behold <2005>, I will raise <5782> up against <5921> Babylon <0894>, and against <0413> them that dwell <3427> in the midst <3820> of them that rise <6965> up against me, a destroying <7843> wind <7307>; 2 And will send <7971> unto Babylon <0894> fanners <2114>, that shall fan <2219> her, and shall empty <1238> her land <0776>: for in the day <3117> of trouble <7451> they shall be against <5921> her round <5439> about. 3 Against <0413> [him that] bendeth <1869> let the archer <1869> bend <1869> his bow <7198>, and against <0413> [him that] lifteth <5927> himself up in his brigandine <5630>: and spare <2550> ye not her young <0970> men; destroy <2763> ye utterly all <3605> her host <6635>. 4 Thus the slain <2491> shall fall <5307> in the land <0776> of the Chaldeans <3778>, and [they that are] thrust <1856> through <1856> in her streets <2351>. 5 For Israel <3478> [hath] not [been] forsaken <0488>, nor Judah <3063> of his God <0430>, of the LORD <3068> of hosts <6635>; though <3588> their land <0776> was filled <4390> with sin <0817> against the Holy <6918> One of Israel <3478>. 6 Flee <5127> out of the midst <8432> of Babylon <0894>, and deliver <4422> every man <0376> his soul <5315>: be not cut <1826> off in her iniquity <5771>; for this <1931> [is] the time <6256> of the LORD'S <3068> vengeance <5360>; he will render <7999> unto her a recompence <1576>. 7 Babylon <0894> [hath been] a golden <2091> cup <3563> in the LORD'S <3068> hand <3027>, that made all <3605> the earth <0776> drunken <7937>: the nations <1471> have drunken <8354> of her wine <3196>; therefore the nations <1471> are mad <1984>. 8 Babylon <0894> is suddenly <6597> fallen <5307> and destroyed <7665>: howl <3213> for her; take <3947> balm <6875> for her pain <4341>, if <0194> so be she may be healed <7495>. 9 We would have healed <7495> Babylon <0894>, but she is not healed <7495>: forsake <5800> her, and let us go <3212> every <0376> one <0376> into his own country <0776>: for her judgment <4941> reacheth <5060> unto heaven <8064>, and is lifted <5375> up [even] to the skies <7834>. 10 The LORD <3068> hath brought <3318> forth <3318> our righteousness <6666>: come <0935>, and let us declare <5608> in Zion <6726> the work <4639> of the LORD <3068> our God <0430>. 11 Make bright <1305> the arrows <1121>; gather <4390> the shields <7982>: the LORD <3068> hath raised <5782> up the spirit <7307> of the kings <4428> of the Medes <4074>: for his device <4209> [is] against <5921> Babylon <0894>, to destroy <7843> it; because <3588> it [is] the vengeance <5360> of the LORD <3068>, the vengeance <5360> of his temple <1964>. 12 Set <5375> up the standard <5251> upon the walls <2346> of Babylon <0894>, make the watch <4929> strong <2388>, set <6965> up the watchmen <8104>, prepare <3559> the ambushes <0693>: for the LORD <3068> hath both <1571> devised <2161> and done <6213> that which <0834> he spake <1696> against <0413> the inhabitants <3427> of Babylon <0894>. 13 O thou that dwellest <7931> upon many <7227> waters <4325>, abundant <7227> in treasures <0214>, thine end <7093> is come <0935>, [and] the measure <0520> of thy covetousness <1215>. 14 The LORD <3068> of hosts <6635> hath sworn <7650> by himself <5315>, [saying], Surely I will fill <4390> thee with men <0120>, as with caterpillers <3218>; and they shall lift <6030> up a shout <1959> against <5921> thee. 15 He hath made <6213> the earth <0776> by his power <3581>, he hath established <3559> the world <8398> by his wisdom <2451>, and hath stretched <5186> out the heaven <8064> by his understanding <8394>. 16 When he uttereth <5414> [his] voice <6963>, [there is] a multitude <0527> of waters <4325> in the heavens <8064>; and he causeth the vapours <5387> to ascend <5927> from the ends <7097> of the earth <0776>: he maketh <6213> lightnings <1300> with rain <4306>, and bringeth <3318> forth <3318> the wind <7307> out of his treasures <0214>. 17 Every <3605> man <0120> is brutish <1197> by [his] knowledge <1847>; every <3605> founder <6884> is confounded <3001> by the graven <6459> image <6459>: for his molten <5262> image [is] falsehood <8267>, and [there is] no <3808> breath <7307> in them. 18 They [are] vanity <1892>, the work <4639> of errors <8595>: in the time <6256> of their visitation <6486> they shall perish <6>. 19 The portion <2506> of Jacob <3290> [is] not like them; for he [is] the former <3335> of all <3605> things: and [Israel <3478> is] the rod <7626> of his inheritance <5159>: the LORD <3068> of hosts <6635> [is] his name <8034>. 20 Thou [art] my battle <4661> axe <4601> [and] weapons <3627> of war <4421>: for with thee will I break <5310> in pieces the nations <1471>, and with thee will I destroy <7843> kingdoms <4467>; 21 And with thee will I break <5310> in pieces the horse <5483> and his rider <7392>; and with thee will I break <5310> in pieces the chariot <7393> and his rider <7392>; 22 With thee also will I break <5310> in pieces man <0376> and woman <0802>; and with thee will I break <5310> in pieces old <2205> and young <5288>; and with thee will I break <5310> in pieces the young <0970> man and the maid <1330>; 23 I will also break <5310> in pieces with thee the shepherd <7462> and his flock <5739>; and with thee will I break <5310> in pieces the husbandman <0406> and his yoke <6776> of oxen; and with thee will I break <5310> in pieces captains <6346> and rulers <5461>. 24 And I will render <7999> unto Babylon <0894> and to all <3605> the inhabitants <3427> of Chaldea <3778> all <3605> their evil <7451> that they have done <6213> in Zion <6726> in your sight <5869>, saith <5002> the LORD <3068>. 25 Behold <2005>, I [am] against <0413> thee, O destroying <4889> mountain <2022>, saith <5002> the LORD <3068>, which destroyest <7843> all <3605> the earth <0776>: and I will stretch <5186> out mine hand <3027> upon thee, and roll <1556> thee down from the rocks <5553>, and will make <5414> thee a burnt <8316> mountain <2022>. 26 And they shall not take <3947> of thee a stone <68> for a corner <6438>, nor a stone <68> for foundations <4146>; but thou shalt be desolate <8077> for ever <5769>, saith <5002> the LORD <3068>. 27 Set <5375> ye up a standard <5251> in the land <0776>, blow <8628> the trumpet <7782> among the nations <1471>, prepare <6942> the nations <1471> against <5921> her, call <8085> together against <5921> her the kingdoms <4467> of Ararat <0780>, Minni <4508>, and Ashchenaz <0813>; appoint <6485> a captain <2951> against <5921> her; cause the horses <5483> to come <5927> up as the rough <5569> caterpillers <3218>. 28 Prepare <6942> against <5921> her the nations <1471> with the kings <4428> of the Medes <4074>, the captains <6346> thereof, and all <3605> the rulers <5461> thereof, and all <3605> the land <0776> of his dominion <4475>. 29 And the land <0776> shall tremble <7493> and sorrow <2342>: for every purpose <4284> of the LORD <3068> shall be performed <6965> against <5921> Babylon <0894>, to make <7760> the land <0776> of Babylon <0894> a desolation <8047> without <0369> an inhabitant <3427>. 30 The mighty <1368> men of Babylon <0894> have forborn <2308> to fight <3898>, they have remained <3427> in [their] holds <4679>: their might <1369> hath failed <5405>; they became <1961> as women <0802>: they have burned <3341> her dwellingplaces <4908>; her bars <1280> are broken <7665>. 31 One post <7323> shall run <7323> to meet <7125> another, and one messenger <5046> to meet <7125> another, to shew <5046> the king <4428> of Babylon <0894> that his city <5892> is taken <3920> at [one] end <7097>, 32 And that the passages <4569> are stopped <8610>, and the reeds <98> they have burned <8313> with fire <0784>, and the men <0582> of war <4421> are affrighted <0926>. 33 For thus <3541> saith <0559> the LORD <3068> of hosts <6635>, the God <0430> of Israel <3478>; The daughter <1323> of Babylon <0894> [is] like a threshingfloor <1637>, [it is] time <6256> to thresh <1869> her: yet <5750> a little <4592> while, and the time <6256> of her harvest <7105> shall come <0935>. 34 Nebuchadrezzar <5019> the king <4428> of Babylon <0894> hath devoured <0398> me, he hath crushed <2000> me, he hath made <3322> me an empty <7385> vessel <3627>, he hath swallowed <1104> me up like a dragon <8577>, he hath filled <4390> his belly <3770> with my delicates <5730>, he hath cast <1740> me out. 35 The violence <2555> done <6213> to me and to my flesh <7607> [be] upon Babylon <0894>, shall the inhabitant <3427> of Zion <6726> say <0559>; and my blood <1818> upon the inhabitants <3427> of Chaldea <3778>, shall Jerusalem <3389> say <0559>. 36 Therefore <3651> thus <3541> saith <0559> the LORD <3068>; Behold <2005>, I will plead <7378> thy cause <7379>, and take vengeance <5360> for thee; and I will dry <6717> up her sea <3220>, and make her springs <4726> dry <3001>. 37 And Babylon <0894> shall become <1961> heaps <1530>, a dwellingplace <3427> for dragons <8577>, an astonishment <8047>, and an hissing <8322>, without <0369> an inhabitant <3427>. 38 They shall roar <7580> together <3162> like lions <3715>: they shall yell <5286> as lions <0738>' whelps <1484>. 39 In their heat <2527> I will make <7896> their feasts <4960>, and I will make them drunken <7937>, that they may rejoice <5937>, and sleep <3462> a perpetual <5769> sleep <8142>, and not wake <6974>, saith <5002> the LORD <3068>. 40 I will bring <3381> them down <3381> like lambs <3733> to the slaughter <2873>, like rams <0352> with he goats <6260>. 41 How <0349> is Sheshach <8347> taken <3920>! and how is the praise <8416> of the whole <3605> earth <0776> surprised <8610>! how <0349> is Babylon <0894> become <1961> an astonishment <8047> among the nations <1471>! 42 The sea <3220> is come <5927> up upon Babylon <0894>: she is covered <3680> with the multitude <0527> of the waves <1530> thereof. 43 Her cities <5892> are a desolation <8047>, a dry <6723> land <0776>, and a wilderness <6160>, a land <0776> wherein <0834> no <3808> man <0376> dwelleth <3427>, neither <3808> doth [any] son <1121> of man <0120> pass <5674> thereby <2004>. 44 And I will punish <6485> Bel <1078> in Babylon <0894>, and I will bring <3318> forth <3318> out of his mouth <6310> that which he hath swallowed <1104> up: and the nations <1471> shall not flow <5102> together any more <5750> unto him: yea <1571>, the wall <2346> of Babylon <0894> shall fall <5307>. 45 My people <5971>, go <3318> ye out of the midst <8432> of her, and deliver <4422> ye every man <0376> his soul <5315> from the fierce <2740> anger <0639> of the LORD <3068>. 46 And lest <6435> your heart <3824> faint <7401>, and ye fear <3372> for the rumour <8052> that shall be heard <8085> in the land <0776>; a rumour <8052> shall both come <0935> [one] year <8141>, and after <0310> that in [another] year <8141> [shall come] a rumour <8052>, and violence <2555> in the land <0776>, ruler <4910> against <5921> ruler <4910>. 47 Therefore <3651>, behold <2009>, the days <3117> come <0935>, that I will do judgment <6485> upon the graven <6456> images of Babylon <0894>: and her whole <3605> land <0776> shall be confounded <0954>, and all <3605> her slain <2491> shall fall <5307> in the midst <8432> of her. 48 Then the heaven <8064> and the earth <0776>, and all <3605> that [is] therein, shall sing <7442> for Babylon <0894>: for the spoilers <7703> shall come <0935> unto her from the north <6828>, saith <5002> the LORD <3068>. 49 As Babylon <0894> [hath caused] the slain <2491> of Israel <3478> to fall <5307>, so at Babylon <0894> shall fall <5307> the slain <2491> of all <3605> the earth <0776>. 50 Ye that have escaped <6412> the sword <2719>, go <1980> away, stand <5975> not still <5975>: remember <2142> the LORD <3068> afar <7350> off, and let Jerusalem <3389> come <5927> into <5921> your mind <3824>. 51 We are confounded <0954>, because <3588> we have heard <8085> reproach <2781>: shame <3639> hath covered <3680> our faces <6440>: for strangers <2114> are come <0935> into <5921> the sanctuaries <4720> of the LORD'S <3068> house <1004>. 52 Wherefore <3651>, behold <2009>, the days <3117> come <0935>, saith <5002> the LORD <3068>, that I will do judgment <6485> upon her graven <6456> images: and through all <3605> her land <0776> the wounded <2491> shall groan <0602>. 53 Though <3588> Babylon <0894> should mount <5927> up to heaven <8064>, and though <3588> she should fortify <1219> the height <4791> of her strength <5797>, [yet] from me shall spoilers <7703> come <0935> unto her, saith <5002> the LORD <3068>. 54 A sound <6963> of a cry <2201> [cometh <0935>] from Babylon <0894>, and great <1419> destruction <7667> from the land <0776> of the Chaldeans <3778>: 55 Because <3588> the LORD <3068> hath spoiled <7703> Babylon <0894>, and destroyed <6> out of her the great <1419> voice <6963>; when her waves <1530> do roar <1993> like great <7227> waters <4325>, a noise <7588> of their voice <6963> is uttered <5414>: 56 Because <3588> the spoiler <7703> is come <0935> upon her, [even] upon Babylon <0894>, and her mighty <1368> men are taken <3920>, every one of their bows <7198> is broken <2865>: for the LORD <3068> God <0410> of recompences <1578> shall surely requite <7999>. 57 And I will make drunk <7937> her princes <8269>, and her wise <2450> [men], her captains <6346>, and her rulers <5461>, and her mighty <1368> men: and they shall sleep <3462> a perpetual <5769> sleep <8142>, and not wake <6974>, saith <5002> the King <4428>, whose name <8034> [is] the LORD <3068> of hosts <6635>. 58 Thus <3541> saith <0559> the LORD <3068> of hosts <6635>; The broad <7342> walls <2346> of Babylon <0894> shall be utterly broken <6209>, and her high <1364> gates <8179> shall be burned <3341> with fire <0784>; and the people <5971> shall labour <3021> in vain <7385>, and the folk <3816> in the fire <0784>, and they shall be weary <3286>. 59. The word <1697> which <0834> Jeremiah <3414> the prophet <5030> commanded <6680> Seraiah <8304> the son <1121> of Neriah <5374>, the son <1121> of Maaseiah <4271>, when he went <3212> with Zedekiah <6667> the king <4428> of Judah <3063> into Babylon <0894> in the fourth <7243> year <8141> of his reign <4427>. And [this] Seraiah <8304> [was] a quiet <4496> prince <8269>. 60 So Jeremiah <3414> wrote <3789> in a book <5612> all <3605> the evil <7451> that should come <0935> upon Babylon <0894>, [even <0853>] all <3605> these <0428> words <1697> that are written <3789> against <0413> Babylon <0894>. 61 And Jeremiah <3414> said <0559> to Seraiah <8304>, When thou comest <0935> to Babylon <0894>, and shalt see <7200>, and shalt read <7121> all <3605> these <0428> words <1697>; 62 Then shalt thou say <0559>, O LORD <3068>, thou hast spoken <1696> against <0413> this <2088> place <4725>, to cut <3772> it off, that none <1115> shall remain <3427> in it, neither <1115> man <0120> nor beast <0929>, but that it shall be desolate <8077> for ever <5769>. 63 And it shall be, when thou hast made an end <3615> of reading <7121> this <2088> book <5612>, [that] thou shalt bind <7164> a stone <68> to it, and cast <7993> it into <0413> the midst <8432> of Euphrates <6578>: 64 And thou shalt say <0559>, Thus <3602> shall Babylon <0894> sink <8257>, and shall not rise <6965> from the evil <7451> that I will bring <0935> upon her: and they shall be weary <3286>. Thus <2008> far <2008> [are] the words <1697> of Jeremiah <3414>. ~~~~~~
